From a very early age the creative side of Michael Lane, the little council house lad, was always present, he painted the inside of the family’s shed together with the garden tools and the lawn mower with emulsion in a nice shade of yellow!
This developed into taking everything apart and attempting to re-assemble them again in between scribbling (artistically!) on walls and furniture in the house. Then school days arrived, which Michael disliked intensely, all but art and later technical drawing. He left school to study graphic design, art & photography, he always wanted to do something creative.
Michael met a skilled Hatton Garden Diamond mounter by chance, in his late Fathers shop named Robert (Bob) Wallace who at the time was buying his fishing tackle! The following week, Bob took Michael to his workshop in London and he was instantly smitten by this interesting trade.
Michael then borrowed some tools and began making jewellery as a hobby in his parents garage, finished his Foundation Art course in Cambridge and decided not to be a hippy after all! His formal training as a goldsmith & diamond mounter then began under the strict supervision of London’s Hatton Garden craftsmen.
After around 5 years Michael went to work in St. Albans, as a goldsmith making commissions, which included work for DeBeers diamond collections. Michael’s parents (now sadly no longer with us), decided to semi-retire to Norfolk, Michael tagged along and with his father Lanes Jewellery was born.
Lanes opened their first shop in the wonderful North Norfolk town of Holt in 1981, moved to their position in the Market Place in 1988 and through the years have gone from strength to strength.
At Lanes you will be greeted with a friendly face and we are always happy to give free advice and quotations. In March 2013 Lanes undertook a complete shop refurbishment, creating a beautiful environment to give our customers the best shopping experience possible.
Michael’s son, Joshua Lane 32, joined the family business in 2008. From a young age he was always interested in the jewellery trade. At 15 his training began. He completed numerous jewellery courses, which included an advanced course in diamond grading.
Josh was considered, at the time, to be the youngest person to pass this intensive diamond grading course in Antwerp, from then on Diamonds have been his true passion.
Josh has always been involved in most aspects of the business, including diamond buying, bench work, commissions and has developed a huge interest and knowledge in prestige watches. This an aspect that the business is excelling in and something Josh really enjoys.
Father & son, Michael and Josh have a great relationship and work amazingly well together. Michael has passed on his exceptional practical skills to his son at the jewellery bench and still continues to do so.
Josh has always been very passionate about all things jewellery, diamonds and business, and in 2021 officially took over the business from Michael. He is keen to push the business forward, making sure Lanes is the very best it can be and putting his own stamp on the business, using all the knowledge his father taught him. Michael is still very much involved in the business (as he calls it “semi-retired”) he can always been found at the work bench in the store.
Like his father, Josh is very artistic, he has a great eye for all things bespoke, and bringing customers ideas to life. From sitting down with a customer listening to their ideas and thoughts, to then guiding them through the whole bespoke process, creating a beautiful and often very sentimental piece of jewellery. Ensuring this process is enjoyable and an ease for the customer.
Another friendly face you will see at Lanes is Cassia Walker, Cass has been a huge asset to Lanes for many years, she is National Association of Goldsmiths qualified with an extensive knowledge of jewellery and customer service.
